'Votes for Women' Exhibit 

This summer the George Waters Gallery is hosting the New York State Museum’s six-panel traveling exhibition,Votes for Women, along with showcasing work by Elmira College students. The exhibit will be on display throughout the summer beginning on June 1.


The Votes for Women exhibit celebrates the pivotal role the state played in the struggle for equal rights in the nineteenth century, the campaign for New York State suffrage, and the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment. The exhibition also acknowledges the role that NYS leaders play in women’s rights and the feminist movement during the 21st century.


In response to this exhibit, eight Elmira College students have created posters based on women in history who have inspired them by combining an image with a quote. The students are Aubrey Chandler ’21, Alana Costello ’20, Sarah Craft ’18, Nova Drewes ’18, Cydney Gamido ’21, Nate Hanner ’18, Jordan Newcomb ’18 and Megan York ’20. Women’s studies minor Alana Costello ’20 also contributes a collage that focuses on the challenges and triumphs of contemporary women. Senior Sarah Craft ''18 expresses a similar sentiment with a looping video.

Additionally, Gabrielle Higgins ’18, a dual history and art major, is showing her senior art thesis project that includes a grid of photographs, ceramics and drawings. Through her work, Higgins reminds viewers of the grim history of women who were victims of witch hunts throughout the ages, but especially in 17th century America.
